‘Playground in the sky’: super penthouse inspired by historic hotel

Developers Chris and Virginia Anderson’s Raby Bay penthouse

Developers Chris and Virginia Anderson have listed their super-sized penthouse complete with lavish rooftop bar and nightclub inspired by Brisbane’s historic Gresham Hotel.

The Brisbane couple designed the crowning apartment of their Toondah Outlook tower as their own salubrious ‘playground in the sky’, with a whopping 1250 sqm of luxury living spaces over two floors.

Features include two full kitchens — one used by private chefs servicing lavish functions, six oversized bedrooms and seven bathrooms, a home business centre, formal dining room, and a showstopping rooftop entertainment zone fitted with state-of-the-art sound system.

A lift connects both levels, opening out to the plush whiskey bar, then onto sweeping balconies with jacuzzi, open fireplace and spectacular Moreton Bay views.

The one-of-a-kind home’s luxury perks include American oak and Italian tiles, six gas fireplaces, LED-lit bulkhead ceilings and finishes of stone, porcelain and timber.

Marketing agent Ryan McCann, of First National Cleveland, said the apartment at 83/45 Shore St, Cleveland was larger in size than most of the freestanding houses in Raby Bay.

While the price for the Andersons’ penthouse was negotiable, comparable local sales would put reasonable offers at more than $6m, he said.

“There really is no precedent for a property like this,” Mr McCann said.

“The penthouse overlooks 900 houses on the water, and only three of those are bigger than this apartment, and then the chattels that are included, the premier finishes, its own private bar and nightclub — it really is in a class of its own.”

Mr McCann said the high-profile owners modelled the rooftop zone on their favourite bar, the Gresham, which occupied a Palladian-style CBD building initially designed for the Queensland National Bank in 1881.

Mr Anderson had a passion for entertaining, and a was a DJ in his younger days, the agent said.

Another unique feature of the complex was high clearance to the garage, designed to cater to the motorhomes favoured by the sizeable local grey nomad market, Mr McCann said.

The owners had held the penthouse since the completion of their Toondah Outlook project in 2019, but were selling after building a luxury house in Queenstown, New Zealand.

PropTrack data shows apartment prices in Cleveland were up 14.5 per cent over the past 12 months, to a median of $710,000.
