An acclaimed Adelaide architecture firm has again put SA on the map, taking home a coveted award at last night’s Australian Institute of Architects 2024 National Architecture Awards.

Cox Architecture claimed the National Award for Interior Architecture for the internal fit-out of their Adelaide studio with a bold design that wowed the judges.

The jury commended the project on its innovative design, saying the flexible and hackable space supported “both collaboration and moments of individual reflection”.

“This vision has been masterfully realised in their studio project and emerges as a model of sophisticated interior design,” the jury found.

“The firm’s driving design principles of community, wellness and craft have resulted in a beautiful, cohesive collection of spaces that accommodate the multifaceted programming of a contemporary design studio, with open areas that encourage participation, private meeting rooms for focused discussion, and contemplative spaces for retreat.

“The studio is characterised by a sense of calmness and order. The main open-plan office is spacious and light filled, offering expansive views across the cityscape.

“The thoughtful use of cream brick, timber and cork infuses the workspace with warmth and texture.”

The jury found the bespoke elements by local artisans reflected the architects’ commitment to supporting local and national industry and had a strong connection to its place.

“The Cox Architecture Adelaide Studio sets a new benchmark for workplace design,” it found.

“The innovative and thoughtful approach positively enhances the studio space, fostering both collaboration and individual reflection in a balanced and inviting environment.”

Cox Architecture’s other projects include the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, the Oval Hotel, Adelaide Botanic High School, Murray Bridge High School redevelopment, Her Majesty’s Theatre redevelopment, Wilderness School, 60 King William St, Memorial Drive Centre Court redevelopment and Oaklands Station.

National Architecture Awards jury chair, Stuart Tanner said this year’s award-winning projects were united by common themes.

“In an increasingly divided Australia, this year’s winners show us architecture can be a vessel

for social cohesion, with multiple examples of public buildings where thoughtful and welcoming design unites people, bringing disparate communities together,” Mr Tanner said.

“The jury awarded multiple projects where connection to Country has been intrinsically included from the design consultation stage with thoughtful examples of cultural sensitivity and strong public outcomes; not just for First Nations people but for the community at large.

“Many homes and public buildings in the Awards either utilised cutting-edge or everyday materials in extremely innovative ways.”
