Can’t Sell? Go from Carpet to Hardwood

You’ve had your home on the market for weeks and there are no bites. You might need to consider making a change. Could going from carpet to hardwood make a difference? Maybe.

Even though carpeting is cozy beneath your feet, it collects more allergens and is harder to clean. If you haven’t installed new carpet in years, potential buyers could be spotting stains as they make their way from room to room. Here are some reasons why a flooring switch could pay off big.

Increase your chances of a high ROI

More than half of homebuyers say they are willing to pay more for a home if it has hardwood floors instead of carpet. And you don’t have to be selling a luxury property to attract more buyers with hardwood. Even buyers with a budget under $200,000 are likely to say they prefer hardwood floors to carpeting. If you’re able to make this investment, you may recoup most or all of it during the sale. Plus, if you attract a buyer faster, you can get rid of current carrying costs faster. Going from carpet to hardwood means giving buyers floors that can last many decades — and there is real value in that.

Make your home smell better

Going from carpet to hardwood also freshens up your place. Bad carpet just smells bad. And as much as you run a carpet cleaner over those pet stains, they may still act up in summer heat. You eliminate a lot of dust, dander, and other major allergens when you rip up carpeting. Brand new hardwood flooring makes it easier for your home to smell good and appear freshly renovated — even if you don’t make a ton of other changes.

Create an easy-to-clean space

Potential buyers are going to be looking for things about your home that will make their lives easier. An ice maker in the fridge, a stackable washer and dryer, a smart thermostat — you want to say “living here is a breeze.” Hardwood floors are easier to maintain and better for people who suffer allergies. You can turn your change from carpet to hardwood into a major selling point. Tell buyers how simple it is to Swiffer and mop the floors. They’ll never have to haul a carpet cleaning machine in from the garage again!

Update the aesthetic instantly

If you’ve been getting feedback on how outdated your home is, a change in flooring is a fast way to integrate that feedback. Hardwood floors look more in style than carpet in most homes; especially those that already struggle with modernity. You may not be able to change out every bathtub or reinvent your entire kitchen but adding beautiful oak floors to the living room really change the entire aesthetic.

Be strategic in your flooring changes

Can’t change your entire home from carpets to hardwood flooring? That’s OK. Think carefully about where people spend most of their time. Hardwood floors in the living room, kitchen, and other high-traffic areas are likely to get you the most bang for your buck. In fact, some people prefer carpet in their bedrooms. If you have a limited budget, switch out your carpets in the areas where they are most apt to get dirty and show wear and tear.

Still can’t sell your home after adding new flooring? California Family Homebuyers is here to help people in the Sacramento area. We accept homes in all sorts of conditions, and we can often close within a week! Give us a call today to see if we can buy your home.
